The US Justice Department have entered the fray in a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, aiming to halt the state's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This court case, submitted to a US district court, targets the redistricting plan supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's electoral map constitutes a brazen power grab that violates voting rights and undermines the electoral system," declared the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will survive legal scrutiny.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and they are likely to also lose in court," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge asserts that California's map improperly used racial considerations to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," stated a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
