Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Test match action

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest set to start on the 21st of November in the WACA.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about his chances of taking part.

"It's clear that time is getting short and multiple considerations involved, aside from the physical problem, but other factors as well," he commented.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he will feature a major part. Ideally it's the first Test. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from three Australian summers in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the contest.

The selector indicated that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the first Test as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the starting games in any case. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for a short period, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
